I started teaching magazine and new media journalism at the University of Sunderland on February 18th, and have had a reasonably good experience so far.
Top Five Experiences (in reverse order):
5. Lecturing on social media in the cinema
4. Creating a collaborative blog with the MAC250 class
3. Getting my new MacBook
2. Teaching structure of features to the MAC238 classes
1. Meeting Yvonne Gill from www.entrust.co.uk, who has 75 placements for students over the summer, at £205 per week. Not bad. She's going to come in and give a talk I hope
Bottom five:
5. Two people turning up for my MAC281 seminar
4. The sound in the cinema when you play YouTube
3. Cheeky Level 1 students
2. Not updating my blog because of no internet at home
1. Friday until 5pm???
And the best thing for 2nd year journalism students to look forward to in their final year...?
I'm running a new 10 credit module MED304 called "Inside Magazines" which will look at the business of magazines, how they are run, what roles there are, the commercial aspects of writing and production, etc. It will be very practical, hands on, lots of writing, editing, producing and workshops based around real world examples of magazine industry activity.
Oh, and MAC381 (I think) magazine writing and production. More excellent stuff!
